Do you LOVE getting compliments? I know I do!

Just got a compliment from the bank teller! She came out of her seat to walk over to me to give me the compliment. She goes, "Omg your eyebrows are so PERFECT!!!" I express my gratitude and give her my secret. She expressed her gratitude in return. What I have been putting out into the Universe over the years is now coming back to me! I would most def go out of my way to give someone an honest compliment from the heart! This is a very rare thing especially amongst most females. When you give a compliment today I PROMISE you will get one back soon, depending on how aligned you are with the Universe. The saying "what goes around, comes around" is LEGIT! This makes the 2nd time this month for me! I challenge you all to give compliments from the heart today into the next 30 days n see what you get! If you struggle in giving compliments then something is really wrong with your self-esteem and you NEED to fix it fast! True confidence is when you give compliments freely and genuinely!

7 Signs of a Covert Introvert Narcissist

Narcissism is often associated with its many external manifestations, including attention seeking, grandstanding, superficial charm, lack of reliability, boundary violation, manipulation, and many other traits.
However, not all narcissists are openly grandiose and outwardly intrusive. Various researchers and authors have written about the introverted narcissist, variously identified as the covert narcissist, the hypersensitive narcissist, the closet narcissist, and the vulnerable narcissist (1)(2)(3)(4). This subtype of narcissism is more hidden, and yet can carry the same self-conceit and negative contagion as their extroverted counterpart.
It’s important to point out that many introverts are not narcissistic. The ones who are, however, may have a way of influencing others around them to feel off-balance and/or insecure.
What both extrovert and introvert narcissists have in common is their employment of an outer veneer of superiority, to disguise their inner sense of vulnerability. While the extroverted narcissist will say, in so many ways, that “I’m better than you”, the introverted narcissist will strongly hint at it.*
Below are seven signs of an introvert narcissist, with references to my book (click on title) “How to Successfully Handle Narcissists(link is external)”. While some people may exhibit a few of the following traits at one time or another, a pathologically introverted narcissist tends to dwell habitually in several of the following personas, while remaining largely unaware of (or unconcerned with) how these behaviors affect others.
1.  Quiet Smugness/Superiority
Many extrovert narcissists are fairly easy to spot, with their grandiose mannerisms and attention-seeking machinations. Introvert narcissists, on the other hand, can be more difficult to pinpoint, at least at the outset. They tend to observe (judgmentally) rather than act, and listen (half-heartedly) rather than speak. Yet, their quieter brand of superiority complex betrays itself through aloof detachment and disconcerting nonverbal cues. They may not express their negativity outright, but you get the distinct sense that they are barely tolerant with their lack of eye contact, condescending glare, eye-rolling, dismissive gestures, groans and sighs, high distractibility, quick boredom, impolite yawns, and overall inattentiveness. When they do speak, their comments tend to be critical and judgmental, focusing on their own conceited views.
This seemingly impenetrable smugness is, of course, a front, covering a sense of vulnerability within. Part of the insecurity may be the inability to relate to people meaningfully as human beings.
“One cries because one is sad…I cry because others are stupid, and that makes me sad.”
― from Big Bang Theory
2.  Self-Absorption
One of the most common characteristics of an introverted narcissist is a sense of “withdrawn self-centeredness”. While many introverts are more quiet but good listeners, introvert narcissists tend to be reticent and poor listeners. Often, they will make a quick assessment of a person or situation, find it uninteresting, flawed, or unworthy of their attention, and mentally tune out (block you out). While most mature adults are capable of recognizing nuances of issues, and giving people the benefit of the doubt, introvert narcissists tend to focus on only what they selfishly want and find agreeable. All else might be labeled as “boring” or “stupid”.
3.  Lack of Empathy
“You’re sick? But what about driving me to the mall?”
― Anonymous
Both extrovert and introvert narcissists share this trait. Narcissists are often oblivious to, or dismissive of others’ thoughts and feelings. Even when you tell them how their attitudes and actions are generating adverse consequences, their response will be more about themselves. Such is the self-absorption.
4.  Passive-Aggressiveness
Some introverted narcissists deal with disagreeable people or circumstances in passive-aggressive ways. Upon receiving a reasonable request from you, they might say “okay,” “yes,” “of course,” or “as you wish,” then either do nothing, or behave however they please. When you inquire why they didn’t follow-through on an arrangement, they may shrug it off with an excuse, or say nonchalantly that their way is better.
5.  Highly Sensitive
Psychologist Glen Gabbard notes that some introverted narcissists are “exquisitely sensitive”. They tend to be affronted by any signs of real or perceived slights, and handle criticism poorly. In the face of negative feedback, some introvert narcissists will defend with an increased sense of superior smugness and dismissal (fight), while others will respond with sullen withdraw (flight). Typically, they will not let on how much the negative experience bothers them, and instead use their well-rehearsed aloofness to continue their schema.**
6.  The “Misunderstood Special Person”
The self-perceptions of some introverted narcissists include notions such as: “I’m special,” “I’m one-of a kind,” “I’m ahead of my time,” “I’m so unique no one understands me,” and “I’m so smart I’m above everyone else.” Statements such as these reveal common narcissistic tendencies of superiority, grandiosity, and entitlement. By constructing the superficial belief that one is “exceptional”, the introvert narcissist creates a reassuring role, submerging the fearful and vulnerable true self.
7.  Impersonal and Difficult Relationships
As mentioned earlier, part of the introvert narcissist’s insecurity is the inability to genuinely connect with people. To this extent, the aloofness and/or smugness serve as a defensive mechanism keeping people away, lest the narcissist is exposed for her or his interpersonal inadequacies. Some introvert narcissists narrowly focus on self-absorbing work, technology, social networking, small cliques, books, games, fantasies, and/or other endeavors to minimize wider human interactions. These activities may also help them enact their covert, self-important personas.

10 Signs Your Life Is Getting Better

When you have been through a difficult time, it can be hard to see that things are improving. You may find yourself looking over your shoulder for a while, waiting for something bad to creep up and grab you. However, if you change your focus a little, it can make your healing complete, and you can get back to your normal life. Here's what you may notice:
The bills are getting paid. It may seem simplistic to some, but if you have lost a job and have had to reinvent yourself, taking care of the basics can feel pretty good.
People praise you for your inner strength. Take it in when other people compliment you on getting through your challenges. Sometimes we brush off such compliments, because accepting them reminds us of what we've been through, which can trigger bad feelings. The trick here is to listen to what others are saying and allow yourself to believe it too.
Even though you may still feel sad inside, you are not crying much anymore and you generally feel a little better. Embrace that you are doing better, even if it's only little things that you can see at the moment.
You are getting more done. With emotional healing, we also get extra energy and some creativity thrown in. As you get back to your old self, you can take pride in your productivity and enjoy the process more than you have.
You are rethinking your life path. This is something we should all engage in at least once a year. Maybe you've always wanted to travel or be a writer. Now is the time to take those adventures you've wanted to take and to make changes that will bring you more happiness. This may propel you into a new direction, perhaps toward your life's dream.
You have fewer negatives in your life. Reevaluating your friendships and relationships is natural at this time. People may have dropped out of your social circle and support system—some because they don't like being around someone who is down and others because they just can't be emotionally supportive. Stick with the few who remain, and you will see the numbers grow.
Sometimes you can see a light at the end of the tunnel, but you're still concerned it's an oncoming train. Again, this is part of the normal emotional healing process. As time passes, the light gets bigger and you can see the world beyond.
Life has become a little more social. More friends are inviting you over and/or out, and you are accepting the invitations. You are also inviting people over, and for now this may feel safer than venturing out. Either way works.
Your physical body is responding better. You don't have that unbalanced feeling in your stomach, your energy is better, and you are feeling stronger. If haven't gotten ill in several months, it's another sign you are healing.
You are feeling that your life matters. Feeling that you matter to others is a very important part of many people's lives. I don't think I could live without feeling like I was contributing on some level to humanity. The only thing that's required is your desire to be a good person.
Who you are and what you do with your life is important. When you can't be your best self because you have been through a difficult time, it makes enjoying life harder. Just think about a few of the tips mentioned and take them in. It will help.

9 Characteristics Of Highly Desirable Women

The dictionaries define “Desirable” as “worth having or wanting; pleasant, excellent or fine.”
Any man or woman who has dreamed of a future has probably created an image of what he or she would desire most in their partner. And most women have probably wished to be more desirable at some point. While the world keeps hankering over what exactly are the characteristics of highly desirable women, the truth is that we can only speculate. The definition will keep evolving.
However, we can safely say that highly desirable women will likely have the following nine characteristics.

1. They don’t chase people

Highly desirable women would rather chase their own awesomeness, because they know running after people is just a waste of time. They also know that it is a much better idea to become better versions of their own selves. The world will take notice when they progress in their own lives.
They don’t have time for such chases because they are just too busy creating a better life for themselves. That’s what makes a woman more desirable — that carefree, confident attitude. They are complete in themselves.

2. They are in control of their emotions

You won’t find desirable women moping about every bad relationship or failure in their lives. Instead, they are always in control of their emotions. They don’t waste their time and energy in harboring useless emotions that won’t bring them progress.
Simply put, desirable women would much rather be a shoulder when needed than be a constant cry baby.

3. They avoid gossip

Desirable women would rather use their time productively than for indulging in petty gossip. Gossip and too much talking creates drama. Desirable women know this. Petty gossip, useless talking, and drama is for school girls — not the desirable women that we look up to.

4. They are not attention seekers

You will not see desirable women posting selfies constantly or changing their relationship statuses on social media with every crush. They don’t like to spam people with such trivialities. They would much rather be known and talked about for their real and meaningful achievements.
They believe in earning attention from like-minded people, not snatching it with constant updates on the happenings in their lives. They earn respect instead of asking for it. They believe in maintaining a mystery about their lives which only selected people can have access to.

5. They don’t lose themselves in their relationships

It’s not that they hold back. Desirable women don’t lose themselves to create happiness for someone else. They have a life of their own that goes beyond the relationship. They don’t cling to their boyfriends or girlfriends constantly.
They don’t lose sight of their goals and dreams for love. They don’t lose their identity. Desirable women make smart decisions about how much time they are willing to devote to their relationships and to their goals. They set their priorities. They let their relationships add to their lives — not become their whole lives.

6. They have hobbies and passions

Desirable women make massive efforts to become better at their hobbies and passions. You won’t find these women constantly procrastinating. They find out what they love doing and do it with finesse.
Desirable women don’t waste their lives with mindless addictions, like staring at their mobile phones all day. They use their time to take up hobbies and work on improving. Some of the most desirable women are the ones who care deeply about their hobbies. It defines them and makes them more interesting people.

7. They are fiercely intelligent

Intelligence does not always refer to IQ. Desirable women are fiercely intelligent in terms of their understanding of the world and its people. They have a certain kind of wisdom that comes from experience, from a plethora of mistakes and a life full of lessons.
They have impeccable understanding of life and themselves — something that really adds to their desirability. They are no strangers to deep conversation.

8. They are always graceful

Women who understand and take pride in their womenhood are the ones that know that grace and elegance are not qualities you compromise with. It’s not about their appearance but their aura. What makes them highly desirable is that they don’t worry about their physical shortcomings. They fix what they can and carry themselves with elegance and charm that only a lady can possess.
They dress well and know how to exude confidence. What makes this all the more easier is that desirable women know that grace does not come with expensive fashion choices. It comes with self confidence.

9. They are brilliant communicators

They have clarity of thought and it shows in the words they choose, no matter which language those words are in. The confidence that they exude can easily win over hearts. They are logical with the right mix of rationality and emotion. Desirable women don’t overdo it.
They will let you talk, make you feel wanted, hear you with compassion, and show genuineness in their interactions. They know how important it is to be a good communicator and they also know what it takes to be one.
These are some of the characteristics of highly desirable women. Of course, there are many other traits that can be deemed “desirable.” Nevertheless, these are a few characteristics that will always draw us in.

14 Unique Thoughts About Money that Every Millionaire Has

I’m sure you’ll admit that money pre-occupies most minds most of the time. Yet research shows that money and finances are one of the toughest things to crack. You need only look at the wealth distribution statistics to see the financial plight that most of society finds themselves in. The results? Well, quite clearly, financially wealthy people are in the minority.
Logically, we can only conclude that they are different from the average Joe Sope. Be it their thoughts, speech or actions – they are different. In this post, I want to highlight 14 unique thoughts about money that makes millionaires different.

1. They know money is abundant

Millionaires live in an abundant frame of mind. To them, nothing is limited or scarce. Whilst most people scramble around – doing things they hate – because they believe money will run out, millionaires know that money will never run out.

2. They know money is the root of all good

Whilst most believe “money is the root of all evil”, millionaires know that money is the root of all good. Money solves problems. Money gives you the power to bless others. Money changes lives. Money brings pleasure. Money liberates. In the right hands, money is the root of all good.
“What material success does is provide you with the ability to concentrate on other things that really matter. And that is being able to make a difference, not only in your own life, but in other people’s lives.” – Oprah Winfrey

3. They know money comes from Value Add

Millionaires know that the number one ingredient that attracts money is problem solving. When you solve problems, you add value to other people’s lives. When you add value, people are willing to pay you bucket loads of cash – happily so.

4. They know earning more outweighs saving

Most financial gurus will tell you to “save as much as you can”. That’s why most of society spends 40 – 45 years of their lives working to save for retirement. Whilst the benefits of saving are undeniable, millionaires know that your ability to earn more money is far more important than your ability to save.

5. They live within their means

In modern day society, we suffer from consumerism. It suffocates us to a point of no return. There’s nothing wrong with spending money. But there’s something crazy about spending money you don’t have. Millionaires budget. Within that budget, they understand the importance of spending less than you earn.

6. They know that time and money have little correlation

Passive income is a millionaire’s secret. By definition, passive income is earning money without you physically being present. Whilst the majority of people hustle and trade their time for money, millionaires trade and leverage their brains and assets for money.

7. They know that calculated risks are not optional

“Playing it safe” with your money is a sad way of living your life. Being stupid with your money is also a pathetic way of living life. But somewhere in the middle, lies a sweet spot. And millionaires know this. They take financial risks, in a measured and calculative way.
“Brave people don’t live forever, but cautious people don’t live at all.” – Richard Branson

8. They choose action not lottery

Whilst hard work and hustling every day is not a priority, waiting for the lottery winnings isn’t going to crack it either. Millionaires act. They believe in action that positions them to make money. The majority of society believe in the lottery, and hinge most of their financial success on luck. We all need some stroke of luck. Millionaires need a stroke of luck, too. But the difference is this: for them luck finds them on the path of action.

9. They value life experience over formal education

Life is a great teacher. It teaches you stuff that formal education will never teach you, especially when it comes to making money. It’s no surprise that most educated people are employed by ‘drop outs’. Millionaires realize that you learn more about money in the real world than you do through formal education.

10. They value education over entertainment

Although millionaires value life experience over formal education, they don’t – for one second – under-estimate the importance of education. They read books. They read current affairs and stay abreast of issues.
Sadly, the majority of society are soaked in entertainment. From television to movies, entertainment occupies a large chunk of their time. Over weekends, it’s parties and clubs – all in the name of entertainment. Millionaires know that money and habitual entertainment are an unhealthy combination.
“Poor people have a big TV. RIch people have a big library.” – Jim Rohn

11. They know you don’t need money to make money

Millionaires use the power of leverage. I’ve already mentioned that millionaires know that there is an abundance of money. Just because you don’t have money, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t money. In addition I highlighted that money is generated when you add value to people’s lives. When you solve problems, people are willing to pay you.
These two factors alone mean that if you have an idea that can solve problems and add value to other people’s lives and there’s someone out there with an abundant supply of funds, you are in a position to make money.
Focus on solving problems and creating ideas. That way, you’ll move from the notion of “you need money to make money” to “You need ideas to make money”. And millionaires know this.

12. They know money is a magnet

With money, you are able to attract things and people – both good and bad. When you value money, you attract good. When you disrespect it, you attract negative aspects. Millionaires know the magnetic power of money and how it can elevate your life to levels you could never reach without it.

13. They know making money is a process

There’s no such thing as “overnight success”. Millionaires will tell you it took years to become an overnight success. Genuine millionaires have invested time and effort to eventually generate the ideas that make them millionaires. They have made sacrifices that most are not willing to make.
Becoming a millionaire is a process. Cheat the process at your own peril.

14. They know that money should never steal your peace

Ultimately, millionaires know that money is a resource that liberates. But, it should never steal you peace. It should never be chased at the expense of your health, relationships and other important areas of your life.

Conclusion

As I conclude, I think of Andrew Mason, founder of Groupon – a coupon and discount site. Groupon generated the largest revenue in a 12 month period for a start-up company. Founded in 2008, it generated approximately $350 million in 2010.
What was Mason’s ingredients? Simplicity and value add.
He harnessed the power of collective buying. He created a win-win solution where customers save a ton of money, businesses gets an influx of customers, and Groupon takes up to 50 percent of the cut.
Where money is concerned, millionaires think differently. Apart from lottery winners and criminals, making millions is no fluke. You have to think, speak and act in a way that reflects that you are not mainstream. Go out there and cash in on your thoughts.

GET EVERYTHING YOU WANT IN LIFE!

By now many of you know about The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. This "secret" is understanding the Law of Attraction...getting all of your heart's desires! Not too many people believe that they can manifest everything they want. Why is this? Limited beliefs that majority of us were conditioned with by society. Society tells us that the only way to live good is by only working for others and follow what others do in order to fit into society. No! BE BOLD! BE DIFFERENT!

The video you see above is what's called a Mind Movie. An AWESOME alternative to the infamous Vision Board! I created mine about 3 days ago and I am truly happy! This idea was created by Bob Proctor who happened to be a part of The Secret movie by Rhonda Byrne. He says all we have to do is make our own mind movie based on the things we are trying to manifest into our lives and watch it at least twice a day or as many times as possible during the day to speed up the manifestation process. I personally didn't purchase anything off of his site, I just used google, photogramio and youtube...all free lol.

If you are SERIOUS about manifesting your heart's desires then take a look at Bob Proctor's site HERE and also take a look at Rhonda Byrne's site HERE. Both sites are very informative and are sure to change your life for the BEST! I will keep you all updated on my manifestation journey. The key to successful manifestation is to BELIEVE that what you want is already YOURS and to FEEL GOOD inside! There is no room for having doubts! Feel free to comment below this blog entry and tell me what you think about my video and anything else pertaining to the Law of Attraction. With that said, be blessed and take care! Ciao Bellaz! :)

6 Signs of Narcissism You May Not Know About

How can you recognize the fragility behind the narcissist’s grandiosity?

The recently published 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) lists precisely the same nine criteria for narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) as did the previous version, published 19 years earlier. So these longstanding diagnostic yardsticks are by now quite familiar—not only to professionals but to interested laypeople as well. Because only the extreme, or “classic,” narcissist fits all of these criteria, DSM specifies that an individual need meet only five of them (barely more than half) to warrant this unflattering label.

As a starting point, I’ll reiterate these selected criteria—before, that is, adding six important ones of my own, which either complement or extend these “official” yardsticks. My particular measures for identifying pathological narcissists are based not only on my exposure to the voluminous writings on this character disorder, but also on 30+ years of clinical experience. This experience includes doing personal, couples, and family counseling with such troublesome individuals. But it also involves working independently with those involved with narcissists—whether their distressed children, spouses, parents, friends, or business associates—who repeatedly express enormous frustration in trying to cope with them.

To begin, however, here are DSM’s requirements (slightly condensed, and with minor bracketed amendments) for “earning” the unenviable diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder:

1. Has a grandiose sense of self-importance.

2. Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love.
3. Believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions).
4. Requires excessive admiration [regularly fishes for compliments, and is highly susceptible to flattery].
5. Has a sense of entitlement.
6. Is interpersonally exploitative.
7. Lacks empathy: is unwilling [or, I would add, unable] to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others.
8. Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her.
9. Shows arrogant, haughty [rude and abusive] behaviors or attitudes.

So what’s left out here? Actually, as regards identifying descriptors, quite a bit. And I’ve no doubt that other therapists could add further to the six additional characteristics I’ll provide here—features that, although regrettably minimized or omitted from DSM, I‘ve routinely seen displayed by the many dysfunctional narcissists I’ve worked with. So, to enumerate them, such individuals:

1. Are highly reactive to criticism.Or anything they assume or interpret as negatively evaluating their personality or performance. This is why if they’re asked a question that might oblige them to admit some vulnerability, deficiency, or culpability, they’re apt to falsify the evidence (i.e., lie—yet without really acknowledging such prevarication to themselves), hastily change the subject, or respond as though they’d been asked something entirely different. Earlier for Psychology Today I wrote a post highlighting this supercharged sensitivity called “The Narcissist’s Dilemma: They Can Dish It Out, But . . . ”. And this aspect of their disturbance underscores that their ego—oversized, or rather artificially “inflated”—can hardly be viewed as strong or resilient. On the contrary, it’s very easily punctured. (And note here another related piece of mine, “Our Egos: Do They Need Strengthening—or Shrinking?”). What these characteristics suggest is that, at bottom and despite all their egotistic grandiosity, they...

2. ...Have low self-esteem. This facet of their psyche is complicated, because superficially their self-regard would appear to be higher and more assured than just about anyone else’s. Additionally, given their customary "drivenness," it’s not uncommon for them to rise to positions of power and influence, as well as amass a fortune (and see here my post“Narcissism: Why It’s So Rampant in Politics”). But if we examine what’s beneath the surface of such elevated social, political, or economic stature—or their accomplishments generally—what typically can be inferred is a degree of insecurity vastly beyond anything they might be willing to avow.

That is, in various ways they’re constantly driven to prove themselves, both to others and to their not-so-confident “inner child” self. This is the self-doubting, recessive part of their being that, though well hidden from sight, is nonetheless afflicted with feelings and fears of inferiority. Inasmuch as their elaborate defense system effectively wards off their having to face what their bravado masks, they’re highly skilled at exhibiting, or “posturing,” exceptionally high self-esteem. But their deeper insecurities are yet discernible in their so often fishing for compliments and their penchant for bragging and boasting about their (frequently exaggerated) achievements. That is, they’re experts at complimenting themselves! And when—despite all their self-aggrandizement— others are critical of them, they...

3. ...Can be inordinately self-righteous and defensive. Needing so much to protect their overblown but fragile ego, their ever-vigilant defense system can be extraordinarily easy to set off. I’ve already mentioned how reactive they typically are to criticism, but in fact anything said or done that they perceive as questioning their competence can activate their robust self-protective mechanisms. Which is why so many non-narcissists I’ve worked with have shared how difficult it is to get through to them in situations of conflict. For in challenging circumstances it’s almost as though their very survival depends on being right or justified, whereas flat out (or humbly) admitting a mistake—or, for that matter, uttering the words “I’m sorry” for some transgression—seem difficult to impossible for them.

Further, their “my way or the highway” attitude in decision-making—their stubborn.competitive insistence that their point of view prevail—betrays (even as it endeavors to conceal) their underlying doubts about not being good, strong, or smart enough. And the more their pretentious, privileged, exaggeratedly puffed-up self-image feels endangered by another’s position, the more likely they are to...

4. ...React to contrary viewpoints with anger or rage. In fact, this characteristic is so common in narcissists that it’s always surprised me that DSM doesn’t specifically refer to it among its nine criteria. Repeatedly, writers have noted that angry outbursts are almost intrinsic to both narcissistic and borderline personality disorders. And although (unlike the borderline) it’s not particular fears of abandonment that bring out their so-called “narcissistic rage,” both personality disorders generally react with heated emotion when others bring their deepest insecurities too close to the surface.

The reason that feelings of anger and rage are so typically expressed by them is that in the moment they externalize the far more painful anxiety- or shame-related emotions hiding just beneath them. When they’re on the verge of feeling—orre-feeling—some hurt or humiliation from their past, their consequent rage conveniently “transfers” these unwanted feelings to another (and see here my PT post“Anger—How We Transfer Feelings of Guilt, Hurt, and Fear”).

The accompanying message that gets communicated through such antagonistic emotions is “I’m not bad (wrong, stupid, mean, etc.), you are!” Or, it could even be: “I’m not narcissistic, or borderline! You are!” (Or, in slightly milder version, “If I’m narcissistic, or borderline, then so are you!”) And if the mentally healthier individual has no clue as to what provoked their outburst in the first place, such a sudden explosion is likely to make them feel not only baffled but hurt, and maybe even frightened. But what cannot be overemphasized here is that narcissists...

5. ...Project onto others qualities, traits, and behaviors they can’t—or won’t—accept in themselves. Because they’re compelled from deep within to conceal deficits or weaknesses in their self-image, they habitually redirect any unfavorable appraisal of themselves outwards, unconsciously trusting that doing so will forever keep at bay their deepest suspicions about themselves. Getting anywhere close to being obliged to confront the darkness at their innermost core can be very scary, for in reality their emotional resources are woefully underdeveloped.

Broadly recognized as narcissists by their fundamental lack of self-insight, very few of them (depending, of course, on how far out they are on the narcissistic continuum) can achieve such interior knowledge. For in a variety of ways their rigid, unyielding defenses can be seen as more or less defining their whole personality. And that’s why one of the most reliable ways for them to feel good about themselves—and “safe” in the world they’re essentially so alienated from—is to invalidate, devalue, or denigrate others. So they’ll focus on others’ flaws (whether or not they really exist) rather than acknowledge, and come to terms with, their own. And in many curious ways this habit causes them to...

6. ...Have poor interpersonal boundaries. It’s been said about narcissists that they can’t tell where they end and the other person begins. Unconsciously viewing others as “extensions” of themselves, they regard them as existing primarily to serve their own needs—just as they routinely put their needs before everyone else’s (frequently, even their own children). Since others are regarded (if they’re regarded at all!) as what in the literature is often called “narcissistic supplies”—that is, existing chiefly to cater to their personal desires—they generally don’t think about others independently of how they might “use” them to their own advantage. Whatever narcissists seek to give themselves, they generally expect to get from others, too (which is yet another dimension of their famous—or infamous—sense of entitlement).

Even beyond this, their porous boundaries and unevenly developed interpersonal skills may prompt them to inappropriately dominate conversations and share with others intimate details about their life (though some narcissists, it should be noted, can display an extraordinary, however Machiavellian, social savvy). Such private information would probably focus on disclosing facts others would be apt to withhold. But having (at least consciously) much less of a sense of shame, they’re likely to share things they’ve said or done that most of us would be too embarrassed or humiliated to admit. Still, with an at times gross insensitivity to how others might react to their words, they’re likely to blurt out things, or even boast about them, that others can’t help but view as tasteless, demeaning, insulting, or otherwise offensive.

They might, for instance, share—and with considerable pride!—how they “chewed” someone out, and expect the other person to be impressed by their courage or cleverness, when in fact the listener may be appalled by their lack of kindness, tact, or restraint. Additionally, they may ask others questions that are far too personal or intimate—again unwittingly irritating or upsetting them. And such a situation can be particularly difficult for the other person if the narcissist is in a position of authority over them so that not responding could, practically, put them in some jeopardy.

To conclude, I can only hope that these additional characterizations of the pathological narcissist (vs. those with less pronounced narcissistic qualities) may be helpful in enabling you to identify them before their “malignancy” does a number on you. And if you’ve already been duped by their machinations or manipulations, perhaps this piece will be a “heads up” for you to prevent them from wreaking any further havoc in your life.
