Things Your Future Self Will Thank You For!

You go along life either with some sort of intention or simply drifting with the tide. How do you plan for your future? Well, the answer is not just to look at where you want to be, but rather – who do I need to become, to live the life I always wanted. What kind of qualities, emotions and experiences would I like have on my journey? Here are twelve things you can do today that your Future Self will Thank You for Later.

 1. Invest In Yourself! We spend time investing in relationships, and that’s good. However, don’t forget that investing time and money in yourself will have the biggest reward in your life. Take lessons that push you forward and out of your comfort zones.

 2. Be Who You Really Are. Too many times we allow ourselves to be defined by others or our career. (You might need help to figure this one out.) It takes a lot of insight and courage to be your authentic self.

 3. Decide What Kind Of Life Do You Want. Ask yourself “What changes do I need to make to live a life of happiness, meaning and love?” Those who do not change enough are left behind.

 4. Stop Reliving The Past. If you spend time in the past, that’s your future. Be a visionary, and believe that the best is yet to come.

 5. Don’t Stop Learning! First, you must learn how to LEARN. It’s not about taking in information, but applying it in your life. Learning without transformation is a waste of time.

 6. Get Rid Of Life Clutter. If you have unfinished projects, situations, relationships and they are important – finish or resolve them. Conclude anything that’s taking attention and energy away from your life.

 7. Do Things That Successful People Do. Find a person or a mentor who has been successful in your field, and find out what that person does on a daily basis. Successful people do things consistently. Be around high energy positive people. Success is not an accident; it’s a committed behavior.

 8. Choose Who To Take With You On Your Path In Life. Choosing the wrong partner or friend will ruin you. If there is someone in your life who makes you feel less, or destroys your dreams, get them off your path. Special friends, teachers and supporters are gifts to be highly valued.

 9. Be Flexible. Things will happen to you that you weren’t expecting. Not controlling but going with the flow, is the key to arriving at your future. You’ll never achieve things the way you thought it would occur. Trust the universe. Flexibility is key!

 10. Let Others Help You. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but strength. The more you ask the stronger you will be!

 11. Work On Improving Your Communication Skills. How you communicate will determine your success in every part of your life. Be aware of the things you say and how it affects other people. Did they get your point? Make sure you are heard and people acknowledge you. For improving this skill, speak to as many different types of people as you can.

 12. Gratitude. Every morning give thanks to the universe for all the things that haven’t happened yet. If you do this emotionally, miracles will occur. Know that you can always start a new. Whatever you have done in the past is not an indication of what you can do in your future. You are not your current circumstance; you are who you could be. Dream big because… The Bigger the Dream – The Better the Life. The best way to predict your future is to create it!

How to Remember Everything

You know those clickbait headlines like “How to [do something incredible] with this 1 weird trick”, or “This insanely easy [something] will change your life forever”, well many would suggest that the Method of Loci (aka “The Memory Palace”, aka The Mind Palace technique”) is one of those ‘crazy’ life-hacks, sort of.
The Ancient Greeks didn’t have cloud tools, smartphones, USB’s capable of housing small libraries or even endless reams of papyrus at their disposal. As such, they had to rely on their memories an awful lot more than we do today.
According to legend (passed on by Cicero, 106 – 43 BCE), the Greek poet and wise man Simonides (556 - 468 BCE) had just presented a lyric poem during a banquet in Thessaly. He was called outside just after his performance when the roof of the banquet hall caved in, crushing all of the diners and mangling their corpses beyond recognition. Simonides, well versed in the art of memory, was able to identify the remains of the guests (important for proper burial) based on knowing the order in which they sat.
While this legend, like most legends, is probably strongly rooted in hyperbole, we do know that many of the Ancient Greeks were very accomplished at remembering stuff.
In a very basic sense, the Method of Loci (loci = place) is a technique used to enhance memory. The central ideas of the technique are that you use visualization (storing/encoding information as pictures) and spatial memory (you mentally place the pictures in a familiar mental environment). This allows for efficient recall, by simply mentally traveling around the environment and decoding what you see into interpretable information.
This might sound like flakey astral-travelling communing-with-nature pseudo-crap, but bear with me.
A few years ago I saw this guy on TV memorise the order of a deck of playing cards. It took him just over a minute. At the time I quickly dismissed it as a setup; a silly TV trick. Last year a friend of mine showed me a youtube clip of this guy doing a similar thing, and then explaining how to do it. This was pretty cool so I started reading bit about it.
The World Memory Championships has been running for 25 years now. Each year participants from all around the world come together to try and remember more names, faces, numbers or words than anyone else. What’s interesting about the competitors is that, despite consistently performing absolutely astounding feats of memory, if you ever see an interview with any of them (or any kind of memory expert that performs impressive feats of recall) they will almost invariably tell you that they have average (or below average) memories, and so do all of the other competitors. Their perceived skill, they will say, comes from having enhanced their memory through training, and of course knowing HOW to ‘train’. The specific techniques they use vary, but all are based on the very simple idea of visualization.
I’ll give you an example of how this works.
I imagine the following story, as vividly as possible.
I’m standing at the front door of my house when a big giant apple with razor-sharp teeth comes running at me. I can see the apple juice dripping down his chin but just as he reaches me I bite into him (he tastes delicious) and he stops dead in his tracks. Next I walk in my front door and see Johnny Depp (dressed as Willy Wonka) standing on my kitchen table throwing chocolate balls at me. I feel confused. I dodge the chocolate balls (ducking and weaving like I’m in The Matrix) and shield myself with an abnormally large piece of bread, which I steal from Cookie Monster. He just happens to be sitting nearby clasping a hamper full of Cookies and bread. I can really feel the texture of his blue fur. The butter on the bread makes the chocolate stick to it like glue, making a very weird looking piece of bread. While I am shielding myself I hear the sound of a harmonica nearby. A big fish is standing up in a pan in the sink play his harmonica and trying to tune it at the same time. It sounds horrible but distracts me from Johnny. In order to silence the fish I try and strangle him with a long rope-like piece of spaghetti. I have to wrap it around him about 50 times but he eventually stops playing the harmonica. I figure it’s time for a snack so I go to the fridge and open it with a violent tug but a huge wave of mayonnaise comes pouring out. As it washes over me I can taste the creamy egg, and I realize it’s stained my blue shirt so I take it off and go to the laundry. We have a weird system in our house whereby instead of washing clothes we give them to Popeye and he punches the clothes clean. While I’m trying to hand my shirt to Popeye I accidentally step on my cat’s tail. She hisses at me and bites my leg. She must really be hungry, so I decide to give her some mince I happen to have in my pocket.
Finish
This story probably sounds quite stupid, and it is. That’s the point. Have you ever gone shopping and had a list of items to remember? Everyone has. We just ‘made’ a list of 14:
  1. Apples             (big giant man-eating ones)
  2. Razors             (with razor-sharp teeth)
  3. Chocolate        (thrown by Willy Wonka)
  4. Cookies           (being held tightly by Cookie Monster
  5. Bread              (used to shield against the chocolate attack)
  6. Glue                (the chocolate sticks to the bread-shield)
  7. Tuna                (the fish playing and tuning the harmonica)
  8. Rope                (spaghetti wrapping around the fish)
  9. Spaghetti         (spaghetti wrapping around the fish)
  10. Mayonnaise     (pouring out of the fridge)
  11. Eggs                (part of the mayonnaise)
  12. Spinach           (Popeye…)
  13. Cat food          (the cat is hungry enough to bite me)
  14. Mince              (for the cat)
Read the story again slowly, and mentally see everything that is described.
Admittedly, this story took me a few minutes to create, and probably a few minutes to read. However, I’m fairly confident that most people, after reviewing this story a few times (and visualizing it) will be able list the items with near perfect recall.
Theoretically our short-term memories are only capable of holding 7 (+/- 2) items, remembering 14 is clearly impressive. But a really important part of this technique is that your visualizations must be vivid. The more stupid, wacky, bizarre, funny or ‘memorable’ you can make the images, the better. The more sensory information you can incorporate, the better. I try and imagine the smells, how something feels, sounds or tastes, and even how it makes me feel emotionally.
This might all seem like way too much effort. It did take me a while to write this story, but that’s largely because I’m a fairly slow typist. To come up with the story (and make the associations, visual images etc.) doesn’t take long at all. You can probably see that this generic visualization technique can be applied to remembering names, faces, strings of numbers/dates, words, poems – you are really only bound by your imagination.
Memory experts really proficient at visualization techniques can create their story almost instantly. Once you have done this a few times you should be able to review your story (mentally walk through the scene you have created in your mind) in next to no time. Not only is this technique efficient, it’s really really convenient.
I’ve only scratched the surface here, but this is an incredibly powerful technique.

10 Things You Need To Stop Doing If You Want To Be Successful

Success means something different to every person: like beauty, it exists in the eye of the beholder.  It is your responsibility to determine what success means for you, and how you go about breeding success in your life.
Despite this, there are definitely hindrances to success. These drawbacks are ubiquitous in their ability to deter your success. But don’t fret because if you seek success, and you fear your actions are blocking your desire for success, you have the power and control to overcome the following obstacles.

1. Making Excuses

Stop blaming other people for why you don’t get what you want. Stop refusing to accept responsibility for your mistakes. You make your own choices and you make your own mistakes. In general, stop justifying your poor choices and stop attributing your lack of success to things outside of your control. Successful people don’t do this.
You are going to err. You are going to fail. When this inevitably occurs look within, in a non-judgmental manner, and figure out what you can do better next time. Don’t waste time looking externally by creating excuses for why you didn’t achieve success.

2. Focusing on the Negatives

Yes, there are negative circumstances in life that you have no control over. There are also plenty of positive experiences in your life. I am willing to bet you have more positives in your life than negatives. You are capable of living with a positive perspective. If you want to cultivate success in your life than you need to concentrate on all the good. You shouldn’t disregard the negative, but you don’t have to give it so much of your attention. Otherwise you are never going to be satisfied because you are so focused on the unfavorable conditions of your life. Even if you reach a level of ostensible success, your continued focus on the negatives will prevent you from relishing your accomplishments.

3. Fearing Failure

As I previously stated, YOU ARE GOING TO FAIL! There is no reason to fear it. Rather, you should embrace it. Learn from it, and ultimately improve from it.
When you are successful you know you are always trying your best. When you fail it is not a reflection of you as a person; you are not a flawed individual. View failure as an opportunity to grow, not as something to be feared.

4. Looking for the Easy Way

I want to preface by stating that attaining success isn’t supposed to be an improbable venture where you have to overcome a certain amount of adversity and hardship. I am opining that successful people don’t look for the easy way through life.
Merely strolling through life on cruise control is not the blueprint for success. You need to challenge yourself at times. Push yourself and stretch your limits. Aim to reach your maximum potential, and then go beyond that. That is a success in itself.

5. Beating Yourself Up

You wouldn’t ever beat yourself up physically so why would you do it emotionally and mentally? Learning how to skillfully deal with your thoughts and emotions when you are facing adverse situations is crucial to being successful.
Get upset over things. Express your emotions in an appropriate manner. Be unhappy from time to time. It is going to happen. But don’t ruminate over unpleasant memories and beat yourself up over things that already occurred. Too much time and energy spent on this diverts your attention away from more important endeavors like progressing toward your goals.

6. Being Ungrateful

The best way to establish more contentment in your life is to be more grateful. If you want to push away happiness, joy, and bliss than be ungrateful. Gratitude breeds happiness but it also breeds success. If you are grateful for your life and everything that comprises it you are going to have a less complicated time attaining wealth and accomplishing your goals.
I don’t just mean financial wealth because wealth includes all kinds of valuables. I am not proposing that all financially wealthy people are grateful, and therefore, successful, or that all financially poor people are ungrateful, and therefore unsuccessful.
Being ungrateful is not congruent with getting ahead in life. If you crave success than observe everything you are grateful for. Your gratitude will serve as a compass for your life. It will guide your decision-making, and lead you to success.

7. Concentrating Solely on Your Needs

Hopefully this goes without saying but focusing only on yourself is not going to help you attain success. You could be the wealthiest person on the planet, and it is apparent that you are extremely successful. If you accrued your wealth by taking advantage of people, or by being selfish and egotistical, you are not successful in my book. You probably wouldn’t be very happy either. The best way to succeed in life is by helping someone else!

8. Getting Distracted

You were going to start your book but…You were going to launch your dream business idea but…You were going to travel through Asia but…
I get it. Things come up. Life takes you on a different course. It happens sometimes. But don’t allow yourself to become distracted from realizing your dreams. When distractions obstruct you from your passions than you are moving further and further away from claiming your ultimate successes.
This starts with your daily life. It is fun and often necessary to log onto Facebook and check emails, but don’t allow the modern technological age to prevent you from the work that needs to be finished today. Success is based on working toward your goals while not letting disruptions hinder that.

9. Living Aimlessly

It is your responsibility to ascertain your life goals and objectives. Being successful means you are fulfilling your life’s purpose every day.
Whether your purpose is super ambitious such as solving world hunger or more feasible like being happy, doesn’t matter. The point is that you are aiming to be the best you can be. Steadily wandering through life without any ambitions or without contributing anything to society is not what successful people do.

10. Giving Up

When you face an improbable obstacle in life how do you respond? Do you give up, or do you keep pressing on? Successful people don’t give up. They commit themselves to reaching their final destination. They may not ever get there, but they don’t allow impediments to prevent them from trying. This means continuing on despite failures and disappointments.
Success encompasses a lot of different arenas. What works for financial success may not translate into relationship success. Being successful as an athlete doesn’t necessarily make you successful as a student as well. There are varying degrees of success depending on what situation you are in.
Regardless, the fundamental backbone of success is trying your best. If you put forth your best effort, without harming others in the process, than you are a successful person. This can apply to work, family, friends, relationships, hobbies, etc. As the late great John Wooden said, “Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.” I think that sums it up beautifully.

5 Powerful Rules for Women Entrepreneurs to Live By

When I became an entrepreneur, I was motivated by one thing: freedom. I wanted the flexibility to follow my dream. Entrepreneurship allowed me to do work that was engaging and empowering.
I’m not alone. According to a Cox Business study, 61 percent of women entrepreneurs started a business to be their own boss, and more than 50 percent became entrepreneurs to have greater control over their future.
So, what holds more women back from taking the plunge? Sometimes, a “good enough” life is itself a deterrent. College, the corporate ladder, a family: Often these things feel comfortable.
“I was successful at a job that wasn’t really that difficult,” Linda Shesto, CEO of Pearl Aqua LLC, tells me. “When it was time to step into a new reality and become an entrepreneur, I wanted everything set up perfectly. I wanted the same formula for success."
But there’s no magic formula for entrepreneurial success, of course. Stepping into the unknown is scary -- and many women doubt their abilities, feeling like impostors. “I believe that no matter how thoroughly prepared a woman might be, she will feel unprepared, whereas a man will feel even more prepared than he really is,” Shesto says. Unfortunately, research supports this notion.
Other women hesitate to pursue entrepreneurship from fear of not having enough time for themselves or their families. Melissa Sherwood, CEO and creative director at Klara Kelly, says that the biggest challenge is balancing running her business with running her household. And there are many like her. Sherwood’s husband can leave work at the office. But she says that her home is her office, making it that much tougher to get work done when her kids are home.
Here, then, are five strategies to help you crush these types of entrepreneurial fears and succeed even as you step into the unknown:

1. Quit seeking validation and embrace your crazy.

This is your business. It’s yours because no one else has had the vision you did to start it. Stop seeking validation before you launch a new product, program or idea. The most successful people are those who were once believed to be crazy.

2. Celebrate even the smallest of wins.

To maintain a go-getter attitude requires positive reinforcement. Have you worked up the courage to make that call you’ve been putting off? Finally gotten through that stack of paperwork? Kick up your heels and celebrate! That energy will carry you forward.

3. Get specific

Now that you’re trusting your own instincts and celebrating along the way, challenge yourself to break down your vision into smaller chunks. With the freedom to do what you want during the day comes the increased need to stick to a plan. What do you want to achieve this month -- and what do you need to do this week to reach your goals? As we know, writing your goals down significantly increases your chances of success.

4. Know that making money is like making broccoli

A mentor once told me that making money is like making broccoli: You’re not afraid of using up the broccoli in your fridge, are you? You know you can always get more.
Similarly, if you’re committed to growing your business, you can’t be afraid to invest in your growth or do the things that excite you. Rather than worry about the money you’re spending, focus on making each investment worthwhile.

5. Decide to be grateful

My dad used to say that no matter how good or bad you have it, there’s always someone who has it better than you and someone who has it worse than you. Comparison is the root of despair. Every day, we get to choose to be grateful for what we have, regardless of where we want to be.
“At the end of the day, I work for myself, and you can’t put a price tag on that,” Sherwood tells me. “I also can’t put a value on the lessons that I am teaching my children as they watch me build my company.”
Like anything worthwhile, being an entrepreneur isn't easy. All of us, however, can be grateful for the opportunity to pursue meaningful work and build a life we love. What more could we ask for?

You Might Be an Entrepreneur If You Meet These 3 Conditions

1. The right skills

Marketing innovation. As Michael Ellsberg wrote in The Education of Millionaires, the prerequisite to selling is listening. It's important to understand people and their needs, build networks and relationships and create unique solutions to pitch effectively.

Managing risk. Entrepreneurs aren’t risk takers as much as they're risk minimizers. One way to minimize risk is to bootstrap: Provide the resources for a startup with customer revenues. Another way is to follow the advice of Eric Ries, pioneer of the lean startup movement, proponent of the “build-measure-learn” mantra.

Test all business model assumptions, ranging from the notion of the customer problem to the hypothosized revenue stream. Startup expert Ash Maurya wrote in Running Lean that the job of entrepreneurs is to find a business model that works before running out of money.

Leading oneself and others. Entrepreneurs keep going when others stop trying. They overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. They build tribes. They transcend the status quo, form new relationships and patterns of behavior and bring change where it's sometimes unwanted.

Having experienced the process, entrepreneurs quickly adapt and confidently try new things. And things don’t always go as planned. Entrepreneurs, like leaders in the “fundamental state,”  a term coined by Robert Quinn in Building the Bridge As You Walk Across It, have the “adaptive confidence,” “detached interdependence” and “grounded vision” to figure things out.

2. The right process

Entrepreneurship is a discipline. Peter Drucker, sometimes called the "inventor of management," argued that entrepreneurship is a management discipline. It’s a process that can be learned and applied.

Discipline implies a process. Entrepreneur and educator, Steve Blank, outlined the customer development process in The Four Steps to the Epiphany, which was validated and further refined by Maurya and Ries for their own startups (Spark59 and IMVU, respectively). The process begins with customer discovery or understanding problems from consumers' perspective and testing whether the entrepreneur’s solution fits.

Then there's customer validation or determining how, when and where customers (the market) and the entrepreneur’s solution (the product) meet and value can be exchanged. And customer creation entails discovering how to entice the next wave of customers to move en masse toward the sales channel. Then and only then should resources be spent to build a company to support the business model.

That last step is called company creation. Before I became a lean startup convert, I used to ask students to do the company creation step first. They wrote long business plans outlining the structure of their company before any of them knew or had tested if they had a business model that worked. How wrong I was. And how much student time and resources I wasted!

3. The right heart

Love of the game. It takes much trial and error to find a business model that works. If a businessperson doesn’t love the process, he’ll lose energy not only before running out of money but also before it's even the right time to ask for money.

Commitment. So what determines if entrepreneurs keep going? Love, like skill, involves both nature and nurture. It entails affection, passion and discipline. It requires both the heart and head. As is the case in a marriage, a commitment to putting others first is needed for getting through the tough times. The entrepreneur should find ways to complement others' skills and invite them to complement hers. Entrepreneurship is one of the ultimate team sports.

Skills, process and heart can be learned. They also flow from some natural endowments.

The most difficult challenge in operating an incubator at the college level is giving students enough time to discover and develop the skills, process and heart to become successful entrepreneurs. And if they do, the next challenge is giving them the opportunity to prove that they deserve additional support to find a business model that works.

5 Life Lessons You Never Learned in School

To the untrained ear, the advice given to Jim Rohn by his mentor Earl Schoaff sounds contradictory.

“Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job,” the late philosopher says with his unique cadence and tone.

But listen to the words from Rohn’s mouth and you know that this man’s advice is anything but contradictory. He’s not saying you shouldn’t work hard at a job you love. The hard work comes naturally when you love what you do.

What Rohn is saying is that personal development—the building and strengthening of you—is how you become better at everything else. Communication, time management, goal setting, leadership—these all improve when you do. SUCCESS has compiled a series of five guides on communication, time management, goal setting, leadership and personal development, based on the transcripts of Rohn’s most popular lectures and writings. Released this month in the SUCCESS Store, The Jim Rohn Guide Series comprises curated, 20-minute infusions of wisdom you’ll not likely find elsewhere.

Here we share the SUCCESS editors’ five favorite lessons from the series:

Lesson 1: Communication

“In order to be effective, your communication should be on purpose. Yes, occasionally you may say something off the top of your head and that can hold weight with others, but this is the exception and not the rule. Know what you want to communicate, when you want to communicate and how you want to communicate.”
—from The Jim Rohn Guide to Communication

Lesson 2: Personal Development

“The quest for personal development is the solving of problems. Success is simply solving problems. Sure, some things are complicated, but if you take it one piece at a time--solve the problems, put it back together--you can’t believe the enterprise you could build. Take it a piece at a time, master it, and then put it back together to solve it.”

—from The Jim Rohn Guide to Personal Development

Lesson 3: Goal Setting

“A life best lived is a life by design. Not by accident, and not by just walking through the day careening from wall to wall and managing to survive. That’s okay. But if you can start giving your life dimensions and design and color and objectives and purpose, the results can be staggering.”
—from The Jim Rohn Guide to Goal Setting

Lesson 4: Leadership

“Be strong but not rude. Be kind but not weak. Be bold but not a bully. Be humble but not timid. Be thoughtful but not lazy. Be proud but not arrogant. Have humor without folly.”

—from The Jim Rohn Guide to Leadership

Lesson 5: Time Management

“When you work, work. When you play, play. Don’t mix the two.”

—from The Jim Rohn Guide to Time Management
